The basilica houses two grand treasures inside the building: the main altarpiece and the Christ of Telde.
A beautiful contrast of colours.
The Basílica de San Juan Bautista is located on the eastern part of the island in the town of Telde. The church is one of the reasons why the town was established because there was nothing around it when they built the primitive temple back in the 15th century. The village settlement started since the foundation of the church. This basilica was constructed using stone that was brought from Arucas, which is characterized by its dark colour and gives it that very special shape of Canarian religious architecture. The basilica houses two very valuable jewels inside the building: on the one hand, the main altarpiece, that was brought specifically from Flanders at the start of the 16th century; on the other hand, the Christ of Telde which arrived in the town around 1550 and was carved using an indigenous technique from Michoacán in Mexico is a singularity that makes it a unique image.
