The Canarian Museum

A blast from the prehispanic past

Established in 1879 in the old quarter of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Museo Canario offers a fascinating look into the culture of the Guanche, the inhabitants of these islands before the Spanish arrived beginning in 1402 (originally from nearby North Africa, they were related to the Berbers). On display are artifacts including ceramic vessels, religious idols, bone and wood tools, as well as mummies and a reproduction of the Painted Cave in the town of Gáldar, 40 minutes west of here.
