Easter Week in Jaén
Much pomp and circumstance for an entire week - plus racing saints (really)
Easter in Andalusia is spectacular, and it's no different in Jaén
In Andalusia, Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) is an especially big deal, and while its celebration in Jaén is not as well known as those of Seville and Córdoba, it's very much a glorious spectacle, as well, and the biggest thing that happens in the city all year. It's an entire week of religious processions throughout the old quarter, with elaborate images being paraded by religious fraternities and accompanied by dramatic chants and songs called saetas and tractos. One particular twist hereabouts is Good Friday's carrera de santos (saints' race) in Lahiguera, 30 minutes outside Jaén, where men sprint through the streets of the town carrying the saints' effigies.
