Generalife Palace and Gardens
An extravaganza of gardens and fountains like you've never seen
The Moorish emirs' summer palace is a sensory delight
Right next to the Alhambra is another majestic Moorish complex, the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid emirs of Granada, known for its spectacular gardens and fountains showing the Moors' obsession and skill with water. It's truly an otherworldly experience to stroll among abd inhale the aromas of the exuberant flora while serenaded by splashing, trickling, and other liquidly poetic sounds. The visit is free of charge, and usually takes about an hour (assuming you aren't constantly stopping to take pictures of the highly photogenic premises). Highlights not to miss are the Patio of the Irrigation Ditch (yes, romantic name - sounds better in Spanish: Patio de la Acequia), an iconic fountain with waterspouts in the form of arches; the Patio of the Sultana's Cypress; and the "water staircase", steps down which water courses from the hill above.
