Discover Estufa Fría

The main attraction within Eduardo VII Park is certainly this greenhouse that houses lush vegetation and proves a real treat for the senses. Opened in 1933, the garden has its own lake surrounded by ferns. Its architect - and painter - Raul Carapinha designed the "estufa" on an ancient basalt quarry where the gardener grew plants to replant Avenida da Liberdade. The best known among them, given its age, is the "Estufa fria", to which an "estufa caliente" and a sweet one were subsequently added. The first occupies 8,100 square meters and is the lushest and greenest. With species brought from China, Australia, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba or the Korean peninsula, it seems as if one wandered through the real jungle. Azaleas and camellias, beautiful as they are, should not stir your melodramatic streak as the ladies going by the same name.
