Praça do Príncipe Real (Royal Prince Square)

The most gayfriendly square in Lisbon!

Even if Lisbon lacks the open gayfriendlliness of other European cities - it has no gay district such as Madrid's Chueca or London's Soho, this square and garden, one of the favourite gay gathering areas in the city, deserves a quiet stroll. On these very grounds stood an old chapel, the Patriarchal Basilica (from 1755), which caught fire and was destroyed 14 years later. Today, it is a pleasant park whose centennial cypress stands at the centre of a lush romantic garden laid down between 1859 and 1863. Nearby, in the Rua da Seculo, we also find interesting buildings, among them the convent of Conceição de Cardais, the chafariz do Século of Carlos Mardel, or the palace of the Carvalhos. During the day, this seems the ideal place to stop by and relax sipping a drink at the square kiosk. At night, however, the area becomes one of the liveliest in the city.
