Le Cigalon

On the outskirts of Marseille in a small medieval village on a mountaintop where the writer and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol spent his childhood, you'll find a restaurant set apart on the Boulevard Pasteur, with its sweeping panoramic views matched only by its famed cuisine. Among its specialties are souris d'agneau (leg of lamb); pieds et paquets (pigs' trotters), prepared according to an 1896 recipe; and stuffed beef rolls called alouettes sans têtes, also from a 19th-century recipe. In addition, Le Cigalon offers set Provençal menus for 8 to 32 euros, accompanied with fine French wine.
