Public transport is limited in Luanda and the best way to get about the city is by private car. You can hire a car at the airport, including one with a chauffeur. This is often safer than trying to navigate this chaotic city on your own. The minibus taxis (or "Candongueiros"), which are easily recognisable by their white and light blue colours, are the most popular form of transport among the local population, and in general they offer a fast and safe way of getting about. There are also buses and trains, but they are not very reliable and we don't recommend them.
Luanda has the local variety of the steppe or semi-arid climate. There is little rainfall throughout the year and the average temperature is approximately 24º C.
The local currency is the Angolan kwanza and the cuisine is influenced by the country's Portuguese heritage, with dishes like Moamba chicken and piri piri chicken.
