Monastery of San Salvador of Valdediós (Villaviciosa)
Only in such a magical setting could there be such a beautiful monastery.
Medieval monastery in a natural setting.
By the river Asta, surrounded by the perfectly green landscape so typical of the region, you'll find this monastery which embodies the very soul of medieval Asturian art. Apart from the monastery, here you will also find the pre-Romanesque Conventín, a royal chapel built during the reign of Alfonso III. Like most ancient structures, this one has its own dark legends, as during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s the monastery was used as a psychiatric hospital; after the war, it was used as a seminary for various religious orders. Following several restorations, it's currently possible to visit and admire the Cistercian architecture, as the original structure and simple period decorations have withstood the test of time.
