Another of Budapest's classic coffeehouses, the Centrál Kávéház is indeed central - on Pest's Károlyi Utca a hop and a skip from the Hungarian National Museum. Established in 1887, it became a salon for many of the city's writers, musicians and artists of all stripes until the Communists closed it down after World War II. Since reopening after the advent of democracy in 1989, it's been restored to its Belle-Époque glory and serves not just terrific coffee but other libations and a tasty Hungarian menu (the weekday lunch menu is especially worthwhile). What's more, while you're enjoying your treats amid the glittering chandeliers, candelabras, vaulted ceilings and the rest of the elegant decor, you'll also be serenaded by live piano music.
