In the mountains north of Madrid, the region's largest reservoir is found in the Bajo de Lozoya valley. Created in 1972, the El Atazar holds 46 percent of the Community of Madrid's reservoir water and makes a great recreational weekend escape as well. Six municipalities surround it (El Atazar, El Berrueco, Cervera de Buitrago, Patones, Puentes Viejas, and Robledillo de la Jara) which make up the so-called Commonwealth of El Atazar, where rural and agritourism have become quite the thing. Each of these towns also has a museum, thanks to a "Museum Territory" initiative designed to boost local tourism. One of the best ways to get to know the area is via the Senda del Genaro, a 70-kilometre (43-mile) trail skirting the reservoir and linking all six towns.
