Platea, opened in June 2014, is a grandiose food hall with 6,000 square metres (more than 65,000 square feet) of gastronomic abundance, more than 21 individual eateries and capacity for 1,100 people. Located on the Plaza de Colón (entrances on Calle Goya, Calle Hermosilla and Calle Marqués de Zurgena), this 60-million-euro gourmet-plaza has kept a fair bit of the structure of the cinema it used to be. At street level is El Patio, with stalls slinging a variety of cuisines as well as tables in the centre, organised around an open area which leads to the level below. This is set up the same way with Italian, Mexican, Peruvian and Japanese dining options. One that deserves special mention is Sinergias, created by a trio of chefs (Paco Roncero, Pepe Solla, and Marcos Morán) who between them boast six Michelin stars. The upper levels are the three stalls areas from which the food hall takes its name. One holds Ramón Freixa's two-Michelin-starred Arriba, the only restaurant with its own table service; another has El Palco, a cocktail bar known for its innovative “medias copas”; the third is occupied by El Club de Platea, with a multifunction space and a stage with a parade of varying musical acts. On the whole, quite a sight to see (not to mention taste!).
