Beyond the famous Belem cakes, Portuguese pastry-making has much to offer the sweet-tooth visitor including, for example, a typical city delicacy: bolos de arroz (a kind of elongated and extremely fluffy muffin). If you're taking a walk through the Baixa, your nostrils may be treated to the delicious aroma of the National Confitaria (Praça da Figueira, 18), the oldest bakery in town. Founded in 1829 by Baltazar Ruiz Castanheiro, it has belonged to the family for five generations. The frenchified venue is a treat for aesthetes, with old desks that have seduced gourmets for over a century and its traditional recipes, which have remained essentially the same since its early days. Even if its offering includes splendid Sacher cakes or macaroons, its specialties are Bolos rei (a sponge cake similar to the King's cake, popular at Christmas), egg or almond bolinhos and coffee pastries.
