To enjoy the urban nature and cool off during the summer days, the 'Ciudadela’ of Pamplona' is a must-see during your stay in the city, where you can watch the fireworks during the festivities. It's one of Europe's best-preserved fortified renaissance gardens of 280,000 square metres, ordered by king Felipe II in 1571 in order to defend Pamplona from French attacks. This explains the remains of the fortification that are found among the green areas of the 'Ciudadela’. Other defensive elements such as the strongholds were lost in the expansion of the city, although there has been some restoration work to recover part of this fortress to give it a cultural use with explanatory exhibitions and samples of contemporary art. Although it's a safe place, it's best not to cross the 'Ciudadela’ at night.
