Casa de la Música (House of Music)

Art Nouveau European gem.

It’s all a jewel with a capital ‘J’ in the crown of modern European architecture. The Casa de la Música (The Music House) was built for the “Porto 2001: European Culture Capital” project and its avant-garde lines turn it into one of the most appealing and interesting symbols of the new Porto. Externally, the building breaks with its environment, acting like an urban sculpture with right angles and irregular lines, which is set on a wavy square of travertine marble, as if it were a matter of forming a link between the old and the new. This impressive icon of modern day port life was the brainchild of the architect Rem Koolhaas, a celebrity who designed the CCTV building (China’s most viewed television station, and responsible for the design of Prada shops the world over. It offers a concurrent programme of events and concerts throughout the year – where classical sounds, electronic music, street music and many more styles crop up, details of which can be found at The auditorium houses a forum which can accommodate more than 1,200 people. Keep an eye out for its restaurant on the upper floor, with a 250 cover capacity, and is not underserving of its place in the vibe of the complex.
