Vila Nova de Gaia

Wine tasting

Picturesque and lively, the town of Vila Nova de Gaia rises up on the left bank of the majestic river Duero, (or Douro, as it is called in Portugal). The number of vineyards which populate the area has come to exceed a hundred. It is here that the world’s most famous fortified wine, Port, has been aged for hundreds of years. And its temperate Atlantic climate lends itself to the long and slow maturation process required by such a beloved brew. With such a history, entertainment seems to be more than assured by simply setting foot in the area and allowing oneself to be transported by the tastes and olfactory sensations which can be experienced at wine tastings offered by the vineyards. At some of them, visits are without charge, whereas in others for a small cost you can sample the different Port varieties, which will delight the palates of both the amateur and those more experienced in the exciting world of wines alike. For sure though, before you tqke on the job, it’s a good idea to get to learn about the six types of sweet and dry white wines on offer there: Ruby, Tawny, Colheita, LBV, Crusted, and Vintage.
