When it comes to dining in San José, there are several terms you might want to learn. One is the lunchtime special, called a casado (which by the way literally means "married"): a combo of meat with rice, beans, veggies, yuca (aka cassava), and patacones (unsweet plantains, flattened and fried; regardless of the main event, the most common side dish in these parts is some form of fried plantain, either savoury or sweet). Come suppertime, Ticos often enjoy a hearty soup known as "sustentadora." Other of the more interesting local specialities include churrasco (barbecued beef); jalapeño tenderloin tips; and various and sundry kinds of shellfish, especially locally caught Pacific lobster.
