As if guarding the city, Santa Clara Island rises 50 metres (164 feet) out of the sea just across from La Concha Beach, helping to further insulate the beach and waterfront from the open ocean. It's also a much loved getaway paradise for many Donostiarras (locals) in the warm-weather months, when low tides allow use of a small dock out here, so that folks can come and enjoy the island's beaches. On one of them there's even a little beach bar - an amenity which helps make Santa Clara a lovely spot to spend a summertime day of sun, sand, and splashing. Fun fact: the island's also home to a species of lizard found here and nowhere else in the world.
