Vineyard visits: Viña Concha y Toro, one of the biggest in Chile
Walking around a vineyard and tasting their fantastic wines is an attractive proposition. Viña Concha y Toro is an excellent option.
Moderate temperatures, abundant sunlight, very little rain during the harvest and good soil has made Chile a first class wine producing nation. Although initially it was known in the market for its good quality-price ratio, it has recently gained prestige for some wines of the highest quality. This is on top of a nascent wine tourist industry, which of course, can also be found in Santiago. Just one hour from the centre to Pirque, you can visit Viña Concha y Toro winemakers (www.conchaytoro.com), run by the company of the same name, it is one of the biggest producers in the country. Founded in 1883, the Tourist Centre of Concha y Toro wine offers two hour guided tours which go through the vineyards, wander though the beautiful garden, taste their wines and of course visit the Castillero de Diablo bodega, the most famous wine in Chile. Legend has it a demon lived in it, a story spread by its founder to avoid thefts. Within the city you can visit Viña Santa Carolina winemakers (founded in 1987) and Viña Aquitania winemakers, founded by French oenologists more recently in 1984.
