Italian dishes for the "nonas" are the real focus of this popular food festival.
One of the wonders of immigration in São Paulo is the extensive variety of food in the city. For example you will find Nuestra Señora de Achiropita Festival, celebrated in August, which focuses on the Italian community. Doctor Luiz Barreto Street, San Vicente Street and 13 de Mayo Street are decorated for this festival and lined with about 30 exhibitors where Italian volunteers cook until dawn. The speciality which draws in more than 250,000 tourists every August (an average of 30,000 visitors a night), is called 'fogazza', but there is also many other dishes, such as macarroni with stuffed peppers, pizzas, polenta and all types of Italian pasta cooked by the 'nonas' (older women in the neighbourhood who know the traditional recipes). And like all good Italian festivals, there is no shortage of cake stalls that make your mouth water just by looking at them. Proceeds from the festival are used for social and charity work in honour of the patron saint of the Italian neighbourhood Bixiga.
