Scuba diving in the Azores: an oasis of marine life
Sitting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean are the nine islands of the Azores and a sea of emotions waiting to be discovered. From scuba diving in crystal clear waters with the world's largest fish species (the whale shark) to finding yourself surrounded by dozens of Chilean devil rays and fast-moving blue sharks, anything is possible in this oasis of marine life.
You can go scuba diving on all of the islands in the archipelago. Thanks to their location in the middle of the North Atlantic, in an area of transition for nutrient-rich streams from the north and the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, these islands are a true sanctuary for an abundant variety of marine species. Blessed with a rich and unique marine biodiversity, the waters of the Azores are the habitat of five species of sea turtles, more than 28 species of cetaceans and nearly 600 fish species, including large deep sea shoals, several shark species, giant manta rays, Chilean devil rays and friendly groupers.
