The world's largest lava tube, some 1,500 metres down - it a breathtaking experience
Journey to the centre of the earth
Visiting the Cueva de los Verdes, at seven kilometres (three miles) long, Lazarote's largest lava tube, is a real Journey to the Centre of the Earth kind of experience. Named after the Verdes family on whose land it's located, some 1,500 metres (nearly a mile) underground, the so-called Tunnel of the Atlantic displays the extraordinary erosive power of the magma that erupted from the La Corona Volcano 5,000 years ago. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it also served to shelter the local population during pirate attacks.
