Get to know an interesting neighbouring Moroccan city.
If you can spare at least two days, Al Hoceima is a fetching Moroccan city some 175 kilometres (109 miles) west of Melilla, once part of the local Spanish protectorate (there are still some locals who speak Spanish to this day); it's the birthplace of Moroccan hero Adb el-Krim, whose guerrilla forces battled and even defeated the Spanish in the 1920s. Around the city are splendid beaches such as Quemado, and you can also get a look at a couple of rock fortresses still administered by Spain, such as the Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera and the Peñón de Alhucemas, or visit the lovely landscapes of the Al Hoceima National Park, an ecologically invaluable refuge for various bird species.
