El Boquerón National Park
A popular destination near the capital for visitors looking to explore a bit of El Salvador's natural environment.
A visit to an impressive (inactive) volcano.
On the outskirts of the capital, 23 kilometres (14 miles) from downtown, El Boqueron National Park is a natural haven rising 1,800 metres (5,900 feet) above the jungle. It's popular for visitors who want to get to know the natural areas near San Salvador, and there are a number of routes you can take through the park. They all lead to the same destination, though: an inactive but still impressive volcanic crater more than 5 km (3 miles) across. And there's actually a smaller caldera within the larger one, called el boqueroncito - cute, eh?
