This festival is the biggest summer event in Vigo and a must for all visitors.
A procession straight out of the sea.
Each 16 July, Vigo steps out in style to honour the Virgen del Carmen; the patron saint of sailors who is, unsurprisingly, very popular with the locals. It is one of those events that everyone should see at least once in their lives. Local boats decked out with flowers and flags accompany the statute of the virgin on a maritime procession, filling the Vigo estuary with colour, music and a bustling festival atmosphere brimming with emotion. Once on dry land, the procession continues through the streets back to the cathedral. The two largest festivals dedicated to this saint in Vigo take place in O Berbés, which is said to be the oldest in the city and in Coruxo, where the procession starts on the O Vao beach and passes through scenes of breath-taking nature beauty.
