The Birthplace of Menéndez Pelayo and His Library
The city preserves the house where one of the great figures of 19th-century culture lived.
An illustrious native of Santander.
Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, a prestigious writer, philologist and literary critic was born and died in Santander. During his life he gathered a collection of books, especially in the field of humanities. This personal library, along with the building that houses it, were donated to the city council. The building is in neo-baroque mountain style, has a massive double staircase leading up to the front facade and is decorated with ironwork. Behind it are the gardens and the house where the writer lived. It is currently home to the house-museum.
