Art Nouveau architecture meets fresh, authentic products and phenomenal photo ops
A true gem of a historic public market
Valencia's Mercat Central has its roots, as does much else in this city, in the centuries of Moorish rule during the Middle Ages. The handsome Art Nouveau edifice here today, however, dates from 1914, and is itself one of the city's most notable landmarks, as well as being quite popular with locals themselves, who regularly shop for the fresh, authentic products sold at its nearly 400 market stalls. Even as it's one of the oldest still operating public markets of its kind in Europe, it's also innovated - it was the first to computerise sales and institute (way back in 1996) home delivery. Going back to the Art Nouveau architecture, it's truly a masterpiece of glass, columns, and cupulas, bringing to mind something like a secular cathedral. Combine a visit here with the Llotja, the Silk Exchange across the street.
