Ciutadella Museum of the Sa Font Bastion
A onetime protector against invasions now narrates Minorca's history
Come to the castle
Throughout the Middle Ages and beyond, Minorca was the object of frequent attacks and invasions from various quarters, from pirates to entire countries, thanks to its strategic position along key trade and military routes in the Mediterranean. The Sa Font Bastion, which now houses the Museu Municipal de Ciutadella, is one of the various fortresses and a great wall erected to protect the island. Built in 1667 on cliffs overlooking the bay, today it provides an excellent narration of the island's history, especially from prehistory (based on archaeological finds) through the mediaeval era of Islamic rule.
