Can you guess the most popular tourist spot in Montevideo? Bingo! Sarandí street wins hands down.
Up Sarandí, down Sarandí.
A trip down Sanradí street is to walk the main pedestrian street of the entire city and an unforgettable way of getting to know one of the most iconic areas of the capital, with multiple examples of recycled architecture and gastronomic hot spots. It is known as the most popular tourist area in Monetevideo for good reason. Beginning at the Puerta de la Ciudadela, this pedestrian street was designed in 1726 by Pedro Millán to connect with the Plaza Matrix. For decades, it was the hub of bourgeoisie life in the capital and was home to various financial and trading centres until it was restored to its former splendour in 1992. It is home to leather shops, iconic bookshops in art nouveau buildings, jewellers, collectables, designer clothes and restaurants, in a relaxed and pictoresque setting where mere passers-by brush shoulders with artisans and street performers who try and conjure up a smile.
