Santa Catarina Street

Time to spend!

It is Porto’s biggest business area, with some of the city’s best shops. The street is crammed with street traders and pretty restaurants and cafes. The most famous of these is the Café Majestic, a meeting place for the well-known and declared to be a part of Portugal’s cultural heritage by the Portuguese state in 1983.This pedestrian precinct located in the upper part of the city starts off at Batalha Square where the San Antonio de los Congregados church stands, and ends in the Plaza del Marqués de Pombal. Walking down the street, which runs very close to the extremely famous Bolhao market, you’ll then find yourself before the Capilla de las Almas (the Chapel of the Souls), a small chuch clad in the blue tiles so typical of the country. As a contrast to the popular Santa Catarina street is the Rua do Almada, with more emphasis on alternative businesses, with specialist music, dress, and urban living shops. On the other hand, close by, there’s the Rua da Fábrica, with its unusual bookshops and stationers.
