This theatre has had various names: from 1920 to 1935 it was known as the National Academy and Ballet and during the Soviet Era it was known as the Kirov Theatre and Ballet (after the politician Sergei Kirov). However, it is currently known as the Mariinsky Theatre. The Russian-Italian architect Alberto Cavos designed the theatre seeking inspiration from the Dresden opera house. It only took a year to build and was finished in 1860. It has hosted some of the very best Russian ballet and opera and, in keeping with tradition, still offers a world-class programme. Famous ballet dancers and opera singers such as Karsavina, Nureyev, Chaliapin and Sobinov have all performed here. In May 2013, Mariinsky II opened in an adjoining building as a sister theatre with more modern installations.
