An exercise in grandiosity meant to attract the faithful will no doubt impress you, too.
A masterpiece of European Baroque.
The St. Nicholas Church (Kostel Svatého Mikuláše) in the main square of the Malá Strana district is considered one of the great masterworks of Baroque architecture - not just in Prague, or even Bohemia, but all of Europe. One of three churches in the city dedicated to St. Nicholas, it was built during the first half of the 18th century according to a design by Christoph Dientzenhofer and his son Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, with an imposing cupula and a bell tower some 80 metres (262 feet) high. The church was inspired by the campaign to re-attract faithful to the Catholic Church in Prague and Bohemia after the defeat of the dissident Hussites at the battle of White Mountain in 1620.
