One of Asturias' claims to fame in Spain is as the centre of the country's coal mining industry. Here in Langreo you can get a taste of this dangerous but fascinating world on board a train which will take you to the very heart of a coal mine, along the same route that 19th-century miners once took. On board the mining train you will go 30 metres (98 feet) underground to learn first-hand what it felt like to enter this dark world where men worked for hours to extract the precious coal. Wind up your visit by returning to the surface on a lift that recalls the cages with which miners returned from a day in darkness out into the sunlight. Information about hours and prices:
