The Gato del Río (River Cat)
Donated by the great artist,Hernando Tejada, this is one of the city's most visited monuments.
A really unusual collection
If you thought you had already seen everything, then Cali has one more surprise in store: the River Cat is one of the most visited monuments in the city, a charming sculpture relaxing on the banks of the river after which it is named which has been delighting locals and tourists alike for two decades. Donated by the famous artist, Hernando Tejada, it is 3.5 metres high and almost five metres wide, and weighs….three tons! Truly incredible! It was made in bronze and was inaugurated in July 1996. In 2006, an initiative called ‘The cat’s girlfriends’ was undertaken so that he shouldn’t have to sleep alone; thanks to this, another fifteen colourful cats now keep our hero company, with such beguiling names as Annabel the Superstar, Flirty and Greedy. Important Colombian sculptors such as Omar Rayo and Lucy Tejada, the artist’s sister, contributed works to this initiative.
