More distinguished structures of the Plaza de España
In addition to the handsome city hall and Church of the Saviour, Santa Cruz de la Palma's main square, the Plaza de España, is home to some marvellous townhouses and palazzos of impressive age and lineage. Prominent among them is the Casa Monteverde, built at the beginning of the 17th century and restored in the 1920s; it now houses an exhibition hall on the ground floor as well as UNED, local branch of the National Distance Learning University. Another is the Casa Massieu, built in the end of the 18th century by Colonel Juan Massieu Fierro to replace a previous structure destroyed by fire - and in 1990, history repeated itself. The building was subsequently completely restored, and today houses various institutional offices and departments of the Canary Island government.
