Museum of Archaeology and History
Based in the Almacenes de las Peñuelas complex, this museum is a must for understanding Melilla.
A well-ordered, well-explained timeline.
When this institution in the doughty former warehouses/bomb shelter Almacenes de las Peñuelas on Calle de la Maestranza officially became a museum in 1987, it had already been collecting local archaeological finds since the early 20th century - it's just that they were all stashed haphazardly, uncatalogued and unexhibited. Now the museum is well organised on several levels which present Melilla's history in chronological order. So there are halls dedicated to prehistory, classical antiquity (the museum's strongest and largest collection), the Middle Ages, the modern era, and the contemporary period. The museum is open daily.
