Txakoli Wine

Basque cider.

When having pintxos in the centre, the custom is to accompany them with what are called 'zuritos': baby beers. However, we suggest that you also try a typical alternative from San Sebastián itself: 'txakoli'. Txakoli is to this region what cider is to Asturias. It is made in the areas surrounding the city, especially in the towns of Getaria and Zarautz. Strictly speaking, it is a white wine with moderate alcohol content (between 9.5% and 11.5%) and it has a designation of origin. Although not very well known outside the Basque Country, this drink is one of the oldest in the region. In fact, its consumption has been documented right back to the 16th century, since when it has been common in all the towns around the city.
