The Museo El Castillo (Castle Museum) stands out for its Gothic-style exterior architecture that follows the model of French fortresses, as well as for the diversity of exhibitions that it houses. Inaugurated as a museum in 1971, the museum has nine rooms in which you can see beautiful exhibitions of such different items such as paintings, sculptural works, and porcelain or glass objects, among others. Part of the its charm lies in the beautiful gardens that surround the building which include fountains and plenty of vegetation, making them ideal to enjoy nature and to see some good views of Medellín from this hill.
Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez

The legacy of the great artist
We're not exaggerating when we say that Pedro Nel Gómez was the best muralist in Colombia during the 20th century, and one of the most outstanding in Latin America; those kinds of multi-disciplinary artists who stand out in any discipline that they take pride in, and it's no surprise that he was known as 'el pintor de la patria' (painter of the homeland). The figures of this house speak for themselves in which the great artist used to live: 160 square metres of great fresco murals, sculptures, nearly two thousand water colour paintings, and an endless amount of urban plans and architectural projects; in short, it's an essential enclave for understanding the development and the Paisa idiosyncrasy of the last few decades. The museum was inaugurated in 1975 and it consists of ten rooms in which numerous works are exhibited that make a complete tour round the artist's different periods. It's such an extensive collection, and there's a possibility for groups to do a guided tour, which needs to be booked in advance.

Carlos Gardel, the great voice of tango, died in a plane crash in Medellín in 1935. To honour his memory and pay him a well-deserved tribute, Casa Gardelina was inaugurated in 1973, a museum in which the singer's personal objects are on exhibition with an attractive walk round the history of this heartfelt musical genre, which is obligatory for any lover of Latin rhythms. You can enjoy different audio visual, photographic, and naturally musical collections that will disengage you from reality, let you dream for a few sweet moments, and take in an unmistakable aroma. Besides this, other celebrities in universal culture like Hugo del Carril and Jorge Luis Borges have visited this centre and left their own marks exhibited next to Gardel's objects. The University Museum - The University of Antioquia

We're talking about one of the largest museums in the region thanks to its important collections which are split into four large disciplines: Anthropology, Natural Sciences, Visual Arts and History of the University. It was inaugurated in 1970 after the merge of another two centres that were already in use, and since then it has become a real benchmark in Medellín. Altogether, its collection is made up of more than sixty thousand pieces in which the Anthropology section particularly stands out with 25,000 pieces, being the largest in the country where you'll find valuable indigenous and pre-Colombian objects, as well as items made out of wood, bone, and animal skins which came from different ethnic groups. With regard to the collection of Natural Sciences, this exhibits fossils, impressive skeletons, and various stuffed animals. You won't leave here feeling indifferent! Throughout the year, they have a programme of different activities besides the exhibitions, developing the most interesting cultural agenda.

From an educational point of view, this museum addresses the importance of water for the proper development of nature for humans, animals, and plants. It's made up of nine rooms which are differentiated by topics, and these are areas in which the relationship with water and different civilizations is explained, how it was first introduced on the planet, and the latest techniques in the trade that allow new and better uses in the future, and all this is presented by combining technology, science and art, summarizing a call to children and adults to cooperate in the sustainability of the environment. There are different and interactive platforms that will delight the little ones in the family, so that they are aware of the value of water. You'll find this museum in Barefoot Park.
The Memorial House Museum

In such difficult times we're going through, it's necessary that initiatives arise like the Memorial House of Medellín: we're talking about a courageous centre with content that is more than bold in which problems are addressed that have been causing Colombia's armed conflict on all sides over decades. To walk round the rooms is a shocking experience, but in the end it's necessary to understand and fairly assess any kind of senseless violence. First and foremost, this place is intended for analysis and reflection. Through personal testimonies, files, brief explanations, and artistic suggestions, the memorial house shows a complete review of the last few years to deal with the cruelty of the conflicts and to keep the victim's memories alive, putting them into the foreground. Now you know: 'el pueblo que no conoce su historia está condenado a repetirla' (a nation that doesn't know its history is doomed to repeat it). A must-visit.
Museum of Modern Art of Medellín (MAMM)
Home to the largest collection of Débora Arango and works by contemporary artists.
A great cultural reference
Founded in 1978, this museum has become an important cultural symbol in the city by its own right. The Museum of Modern Art of Medellín, which is commonly known by the acronym MAMM, houses intriguing collections by great Colombian contemporary artists, as well as international ones, and exhibits highly valuable works belonging to the different avant-gardes during the previous century. Special interest is generated by the painter Débora Arango's exhibitions with more than two hundred examples, being the largest collection there is, and by the famous sculptor Hernando Tejado, which includes more than six hundred pieces. Besides these, you can also see creations by other artists like Carlos Rojas, Enrique Grau, Bernardo Salcedo, Manuel Hernández and Beatriz González, among others. Going beyond the collections of paintings, the museum also offers a renowned cultural programme where you'll find concerts of different musical genres, as well as the projection of independent films. The Museum of Antioquia is the headquarters for culture in Medellín, and an ode to good taste where hundreds of top quality works are on exhibition by national and international artists. Rio Claro Canyon Nature Reserve

This incredible place with an area of 250 hectares is located at just under three hours from Medellín, a natural wonder made up of humid tropical forests, and a landscape which is dominated by karstic elements and caves. It's an area of sustainable preservation where several endemic species of flora and fauna live, more than six hundred different families of mammals, reptiles, fish, and typical birds from this area, and some of which are even endangered species. Río Claro (Clear River) took its name after its transparent waters, and its marble river bed is the axis, providing the backbone of the whole nature reserve. And do you know what the best thing is? The most adventurous people can practice their favourite sports by organising peaceful treks, to fearless rafting and canopy tours. Its famous vias ferratas and different potholing activities complete a natural place of unbelievable beauty.
Eastern Antioquia

To disconnect from the city
The Guatapé Reservoir isn't the only attraction in this area known as Eastern Antioquia: this inland region offers you the opportunity to totally disconnect from the city centre and enter into a beautifully formed, natural paradise. The great diversity of climates and landscapes offers such impressive places such as Salto del Río Buey in the town of La Ceja, which is a waterfall of more than thirty metres in height, or the San Sebastian Ecological Reserve where you'll find a dense forest that is hidden by the mist every morning, creating a panoramic view that you'll find easy to remember. There are other places such as San Antonio de Pereira, which is considered as the Colombian capital of the meat pie, or Carmen de Viboral, which is famous for making traditional pottery, and where it's possible to distinguish the aroma of the ancient Paisa culture among the streets. The famous rural markets are held on Saturdays and Sundays in different parks in Medellín, a municipal initiative that emerged in 2012 that hasn't stopped gradually growing since then. We're talking about ecological markets in which only products by local farmers are sold, a wide range of healthy options that represent the magnificence of Antioquian gastronomy: vegetables, fruit, marmalades, tamales, dairy products, pickles, arepas, leafy vegetables, and an endless amount of top quality items without pesticides or preservatives. And do you know what the best thing is? The prices. Yes, you read it correctly: traders can reduce prices when they sell you their products directly and avoid intermediaries. Quality at bargain prices. The busiest rural market takes place at the Parque Lineal de la Presidenta on Sundays from 7am to 1pm. A unique opportunity!
Metrocable Medellín

Ever imagined a metro line designed among the clouds instead of under ground? Well, yes, you'll find it in Medellín. In fact, the Metrocable goes beyond a means of conventional transport to turn into a unique and different experience that has its own value: it doesn't just give you the opportunity to discover the districts higher up in the city, it will also make you a participant in such a beautiful panoramic view from high up in the air, which is ideal for immortalizing these unforgettable moments. The cabins are comfortable, clean, and most of all they're a really economical option. There are currently three lines in operation, which are the J, K, and L lines (the latter is the most touristic), as well as another two that are about to open named the 'H' and the 'M' lines, which in turn connect with other stations of the tram and the Metro, creating a complete transport network that allows you to get around without any kind of restriction.

The San Pedro Cemetery Museum

A place with history
Sure, why not? A cemetery can also become one of the most important monuments in the city, and the San Pedro, which was established in 1842, is the clearest example in Medellín. You can see impressive mausoleums and tombs here that will leave you stunned by their spectacularity: they weren't only brought directly from Italy, many of them were also engraved by famous national artists such as Bernardo Vieco and Marco Tobón who turned them into real works of art. The designs are inspired by different artistic movements, such as the Renaissance, classical, or neo-Gothic periods, and important figures of national Colombian history like presidents, entrepreneurs, and artists rest underneath such artwork. The cemetery building houses a museum and a cultural centre nowadays where interesting national art funds are exhibited, and it's also a venue for concerts and theatre plays.
Plaza Cisneros

A forest of lights
Originality takes precedence. With these three words you could define the spectacular design of the central Plaza Cisneros of which pays tribute to the engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros, who was the driving force behind the railway in Antioquia. However, Plaza Cisneros is colloquially known as 'Lights Park' due to the interesting lighting installations that this place has: there are three hundred light poles, a total of 2,100 reflectors, and 170 lamps scattered around the grounds, which give shape to such a special forum. Some of the poles even measure more than 20 metres tall. The spectacle that the enormous Plaza Cisneros offers, which measures 16 square kilometres, is extremely startling when the night falls and the place is lit up with thousands of sparkling lights that lead to the sunset and intermingle with water fountains and fade into the horizon. Plaza Cisneros is undoubtedly a real forest and its beauty will leave you speechless. Spectacular!
The San Ignacio Building - The University of Antioquia

A house of wisdom
The great pride of Medellín, and not only for the valuable academic contribution that constantly flows from the University of Antioquia. The San Ignacio building is a real emblem of the city, and a historical construction that reflects the evolution of the capital society through its elegant architecture, so it's no wonder that it was declared as a national monument in 1982. It's construction began in 1803, and it has been through some refurbishments since then. The facade is an unmistakable neoclassical style, but it has another series of elements that make it a little eclectic: the refined ornamentation on its windows, doors, balustrades and arches are particularly outstanding which give it a touch of grandeur, and the tower located at the main entrance is very intriguing. The building is made up of two interior cloisters and different rooms that revolve around them, and it also home to a church. These two buildings are a real must-visit, and you can't miss out on these during your tour of the city.
Monument to Race
A 38-metre tall sculpture that represents an allegory of Antioquian roots.
Really heart-rending
Inaugurated in 1988, this sculpture is one of the most outstanding works by Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, who is another one of the great artists from the Antioquian region, and during the previous century. The Monument to Race measures 38 metres and represents an allegory of Antioquian roots which displays a complete historical retrospect of conquered civilizations in which the characters are portrayed in movement, and make up different scenes. It's also possible to see part of their labour obligations and how religion had a considerable influence over their understanding of life. There is a metaphorical representation of death on the upper part of this huge curved frame, and its endless amount of detail combined with the feeling that it gives you powerfully attracts attention, which makes this a heart-rending monument. You can be rest assured that it won't leave you feeling indifferent. The monument is located in the middle of the city on the square of La Alpujarra Administrative Centre.
The Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of Culture
An impressive neogothic building crowned by a twenty-metre high dome.
With an air of superiority
Without any fear of being mistaken, we can confirm that this is the most impressive building on an architectural level from all those that you'll discover in Medellín. It was designed by the famous Belgian architect Augustín Goovaerts and built in 1925. In a noticeable neo-Gothic style, the flying buttress arches are perfectly combined with large windows that give it an unmistakable and majestic air of superiority. Now, there are two parts that stand out from the rest: on the one hand, the combination of white and grey pieces of its exterior facade that create the most striking contrast; and on the other hand, the fascinating dome which is almost at 20 metres in height to crown the building, and is a real masterpiece of engineering. Inside the building, the Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of Culture houses the city's historical and photographical archive, as well as a museum, art galleries, and rooms in which cultural activities are scheduled. There is a possibility to do a guided tour inside the building, which is completely free of charge.
Botero Plaza

'El Parque de los Gordos'
Fernando Botero is the most internationally well-known Colombian artist, and Medellín's 'favourite son'. As it could not have been any other way, the city wanted to pay tribute to him, but not just by naming a square after his name, as this square features various of his creations on display outdoors. Inaugurated in 2002, this area is home to 23 black sculptures made of bronze that represent multiple overweight bodies, which are so typical of the great artist, including women, men, and animals that are mixed together to create a really harmonious combination that complements the green surroundings in a peaceful atmosphere. This feature has allowed the Botero Plaza to be colloquially known as 'El Parque de los Gordos' (The Park of the Fat Ones), making a perfect example of how to bring culture closer to the residents. If that wasn't enough, the sculptures make up an unbeatable entrance hall for the Museum of Antioquia, which is the city's large cultural headquarters. You'll love it!

We are talking about one of the unavoidable visits during your time in Medellín. Cerro Nutibara is a small mountain eighty meters high from which you will have the opportunity to contemplate beautiful views of the city thanks to its viewpoint, a natural oasis that provides that desired contrast to the urban nucleus. And pay attention, because here comes the best: in 1977, a replica of a typical Antioquia town from the beginning of the 20th century was built on its top, with its central square, its chapel, the town hall, its houses of suggestive colors and its traditional gardens. It is a piece of history reflected on the map only for your enjoyment, allowing you an authentic journey through time; the beauty of the place, surrounded by pure vegetation, cannot be narrated in words. This well-known Pueblito Paisa is one of the most visited attractions in the capital.

An example of religious architecture
Located opposite a park which takes the colloquial name, El Poblado, this church is one of the most important in Medellín. It was built during the end of 1816, and since then, it has become a landmark for the residents due to its convenient mass times, as well as for those who visit the city, thanks to its fine architecture: built in red brick, it shows off its main facade with simple adornment where three different kinds of arches stand out that shape its four sections and its central turret that rises impressively towards the sky. Its sober looking and well lit interior is crowned by an altar with different engravings, and various stained-glass windows that take care of creating shimmers of colour in the room. This church is undoubtedly one of the best examples of religious architecture in the city.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Medellín

We are in front of the main church in the capital. Designed by the great French architect, Charles Émile Carré, the building was inaugurated during 1931. Consisting of three naves, the church is built in a Neo-Romanesque style and it's characterised by the peculiar clay colour of the bricks; in fact the Metropolitan Cathedral of Medellín is the largest brick church in the world, as more than a million pieces were used to build it! Two huge towers of 66 metres tall stand out on the buildings facade. Its dark interior is distinguished by a moderate representation of decorative elements, but the stained-glass windows, marble fountains, and the canopy of the altar create the most remarkable contrast. The cathedral's two most artistic attractions are El Cristo del Perdón, which is a masterpiece by Francisco Antonio Cano, and the sculpture of Jesús Crucificado, created by the sculptor, Bernardo Vieco.
