Natural and sculptural beauty in one of the city's central parks.
On the banks of the River Plate.
On the bank of the River Plate, this green lung of the city is not only a place of lush natural beauty but is also home to a range of cultural treasures in the form of sculptures and fountains. Two of the most famous are the monument to José Enrique Rodó and the fountain known as the Fuente de los Atletas; the latter represents three seasoned athletes holding up a huge cup overflowing with water. It was made by the Uruguayan sculptor José Luis Zorilla de San Martín. The best time to visit the Parque Rodó is on Sundays, when it hosts a traditional craft and clothes market. These 43 hectares of green space are home to a lake, a castle, a funfair, the national museum of visual arts, known as the MNAV, and the Teatro de Verano. It is one of the most popular places in the city during the carnival celebrations which are a real national event.
