During the French government of Algeria, the city had a railway system; it was inaugurated in 1898, crossed the city and took the inhabitants to areas outside the city centre, which was where many of them worked. However, the city had to declare itself bankrupt on a number of occasions, and on one of these occasions, in 1950, it was decided that the railway was not included in the enterprises which the local authority would have to maintain, because of its high financial cost. It wasn’t until 2013 that trams were seen once again, running along the main city streets together with renovated trains, some new wagons and some new routes. Today it has become an enchanting method of transport from which you can learn about some of the important points in Oran, an original, comfortable and endearing method of getting around the historic centre. Dar-elBahia

A beautiful colonial legacy
This is another piece of symbolic colonial architecture. This building located in the city hall square is one of the emblems from the city’s French period; unsurprisingly, it is a megalomaniac building, because the Gallic authorities wanted to produce a display of hegemonic power before the citizens and other imperialist threats, like the Spanish, with whom they were in continual conflict for possession of the area. Currently, this enormous building with beautiful rows of balconies on the roof serves as the seat of the City Hall, which is why it flies the national flag. It is a true symbol. It watches over the large city square, a perfect green area for relaxing after a wander around the historic centre; the peaceful atmosphere surrounding you here lets you see the grandeur of times past and how it is still survives today.

A symbol of the French legacy
The French invasion of the country did not bring with it only conflict between the two cultures, but also lengthy periods of peace, co-existence and many improvements to Algerian cities, Oran amongst them. A large part of the urban changes made in the city still exist today and, in some cases, are still in operation. Some of these have even become symbols of the city: and this is the case for the Fontaine d’Aucour (Aucour Fountain), one of the city’s two main sources of running water during the XVIII century. These constructions took water from the riverbed to the top of the San Felipe Castle and meant a genuine drinking water supply system for the whole city, an improvement with massive benefits for all the inhabitants. You can still visit the fountain today, half hidden in the park that surrounds it. A piece of living history!

An artistic venue par excellence
This is one of the most exceptional buildings in Oran. It belongs to the colonial period. It was the French crown that ordered it to be built and then converted it into the bishop’s residence, and so it remained until the end of the XX century. During this period, Pierre Claverie, bishop of the city during the eighties and nineties, decided to donate the building to establish a cultural centre in the city, a decision that made him one of the most highly-regarded public personalities in the city. Since then, the Palace of Culture has reinvented itself completely and now shows the work of musicians, painters, poets and sculptors from around the world, with work by both local and international artists; in fact, it became one of the most coveted stages for plays and music concerts, a reputation which it still has today. Our suggested itinerary
Although the layout of Oran is slightly arbitrary, which inevitably becomes a part of its charm, it is also useful to know that there are some areas where there is a greater concentration of shops, businesses and services, and that these are not necessarily the most modern parts of the city. So, on the day you have set aside for shopping, we recommend that you start on Mohamed Khemisti and Larbi Ban M’hidi streets: these are the central avenues which have a large number of shops, a mixture of family stalls selling artisanal products and other, more expensive, clothing stores. The area of Michelet is the main shopping area and this is where you will find the best selection of shops. In contrast, the southern area of Oran has a large number of street markets, which are much more authentic and local. The best thing? The city is small enough to walk from one area to the other

If you are thinking of setting aside a day for shopping in the city, we would like to share some advice with you that we think will be really useful. For example, you need to know that shops usually open from 9 to 12.30 in the morning and from 2.30 to 19.00 in the afternoon/evening. As you can see, opening hours are shorter, so you will have to do your shopping quickly. On the other hand, on Thursday afternoons, many establishments close, and on Fridays too, as this day is considered to be a non-working day; however, all shops are open on Sundays and, in fact, it is one of the most important days for markets, when they are normally packed with people. You must also remember that in some shops it is normal to offer a complimentary cup of tea or herbal tea, and it would be considered rude not to accept.

Although Algeria’s star product is its carpets, there are other greatly appreciated souvenirs you can take home with you. For example, tourists often buy culinary souvenirs such as the delicious dates, which you can find almost everywhere and which are easy to carry. There are other, very characteristic, artisanal products made in the area, such as the famous desert roses or leather clothes. And if you are looking for a more luxurious present, the jewellery from Beni Yenni and its red coral will make a really original souvenir, a definite success. Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to peruse items of the Tuareg culture and other Berber peoples from prior to the arrival of the Europeans, such as utensils for the home or musical instruments which are very popular. Self help tips
As we know that you are going to go shopping when you visit Oran, pay special attention to this really useful advice. Firstly, the country’s official currency is the Algerian Dinar, which replaced the French Franc which was in use until 1964; the Dinar is divided into 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 santeems and, although it may seem trivial, it is important to know this when dealing with change. It is most likely that the majority of your purchases in Oran will be made at stalls, markets and street fairs, and in these places everybody haggles. Secondly, in restaurants and other businesses it is customary to leave a tip, and usually amounts are rounded up as a way of doing this, in contrast to other places where a percentage is calculated. As you will realize, when you see all the different stalls and markets in Oran, artisanal crafts are the pièce de résistance in the shops, and this is where carpets have a significant commercial role to play. And it is through the carpets that we can learn a little more about the country’s history, as each region of Algeria made their carpets with their own individual characteristics; even so, they are all made from sheep and goat wool, and they are all of the highest quality. If you are interested in this type of craft, you need to know that there is a carpet fair in the city of Ghardaia every March: this city is about 500 kilometres from Oran and equidistant from the capital. Here you will have the chance to peruse and understand the deep significance of popular artisanal products for Algerian culture. It will be a unique opportunity.
Music
Music is vital to the understanding of Algerian folklore, it is one of its most deeply-rooted elements.
Tunes for all tastes
Tradition in Algeria was marked not just by Spanish and French influences, but the old pre-European tribes also put down some deep roots which still survive today in the country’s folklore. Music is one of the disciplines where the African culture, identity and roots are noticeable; it is not surprising that we can learn more about Oran’s different civilizations through its music. In Oran’s streets, concert halls and its many festivals, you will hear the Arab-Andalusian music which gave rise to malouf, a music of Bedouin origin which is particularly important in Algeria. Also tuareg music from Tamanrasset and Djanet and a lot of sung poetry from the Aures area. But, above all, look out for rai music, a style of music which has made an impression on younger Algerians and which has become really popular.

A true mix of cultures
Algerian pottery is the result of an intermingling of cultures which has developed over time: some people think that it is a tradition that has been around since ancestral times, although the reality is that all the local arts have been shaped by the different civilizations that have passed through. This accounts for the significant variations you will see in the different areas of Algeria: in Kabylia, the pottery tends to be a reddish colour; in the Adrar area, the colour tends to be black; and the pottery produced in the Nementcha Mountains has shades of red and pink and different brown tones due the clay used to make it in this area. Luckily, you will find all these varieties of pottery in Oran, and you can choose the one that best fits in with the décor of your house.

Don't miss it: this is one of the most enchanting places in Oran.
Ready to haggle?
This is, without a doubt, the most authentic, enchanting place in the city. When you arrive in this district, you will understand why that old chestnut ‘be careful not to get lost in the souk’ is true for Oran; its intricate streets, jam-packed with people are a maze for non-residents, as all the streets look the same and it is really easy to lose your bearings. Also, you must take the opportunity to blend in with your surroundings, which shouldn’t be too difficult as it is rarely visited by tourists. Don’t worry about prices, but if you do have to haggle to reach a fair and reasonable price, don’t forget that you are in the home of haggling. Show off your negotiating skills! Just the crowds, the shouting and the material stalls bursting with decorative items make this one of the most interesting places in the city centre.

When we approach its commercial aspect, Oran can be defined as a messy and frayed city that, along its narrow streets, leaves a trail of stalls, markets and family stores with really interesting products. This, far from being a setback, works in favor of the city; It is part of its charm, and, once known, it gives it a particular magic that lies in being able to find a pleasant (and unique) surprise in every corner you pass through. In this way, the Marché Medina Jedida is a very quiet pedestrian area, where different markets and stalls are located where the merchants of the area offer everything from the original crafts of the region to its best gastronomic products. It is for this last characteristic that it is worth visiting: here you will find high-quality legumes, vegetables, spices and fresh products that make up the basis of Algerian gastronomy.

Infinite possibilities
The centre of Oran, characteristically, offers an extremely wide range of items for keen shoppers. Although there are some shops with international reach, especially in the fields of fashion and accessories, that’s not exactly where the essence of shopping in this city lies: you will find it in the large quantity of stalls in the street, in the souk or in the mobile stalls selling local products. The arts and crafts of Oran focus on different forms of ceramics with the infinite iconography belonging to the country’s folklore and, particularly, on carpets and related products. All around the city you will find innumerable types of tapestries, embroidery, shawls and cloths made by hand by their sellers, using traditional techniques. And do you know the best thing? They are top-quality products at very good prices. Our advice to you is, be prepared to haggle!
The Casbah Fortress

Cliffs and so much more
Situated on the cliffs which look out over the sea, the Casbah Fortress (Citadelle de la Casbah) perches on the cliff tops as if trying to escape from the map. Well-protected by a surrounding wall, this settlement exudes the history of the city it once was, based on defence from possible attacks and invasions coming from the sea. The stone-paved streets which surround the buildings continue to maintain and show Oran’s true idiosyncratic character, this haphazard city, a result of the cultural intermingling of a generous handful of Berber cultures which, once, mixed with the Spanish and French civilizations. In fact, inside the building is the Puerta de España (the Spanish Door), one of the most important architectural symbols of the city. As the sun sets over the sea you will see one of the most attractive sunsets you could ever imagine. If we had to recommend one thing, it would be to wander around the area to see night falling gently over the casbah.

There's winter here too
To say that Algeria is a country of contrasts is merely stating the obvious. What you maybe didn’t know is that, in contrast with the well-known desert climate of a large part of the country, the northern area has a completely different ecosystem, where there is snow in winter and also some winter resorts: we are talking about the areas of Kabylia and Aures. There is a fascinating variety of really interesting places which are worth a visit. One of the most important cities is Constantina and of more rural interest is the town of Kabylia, an indigenous town, famous, amongst other things, for sheep breeding. Finally, the Djurdjura rises from the natural plain, with its mountain passes and peaks making a natural haven of exceptional beauty.

Truly remarkable shapes
Now let’s talk about the flip side of the coin. The area of Assekrem is a huge contrast to the desert region of the Ergs: in this extremely rugged area of Algeria are the Black Mountains of Hoggar; people say that they are shaped like an eagle’s nest, but you will have to find this out for yourself. At just over 2,100 metres high is the hermitage built by two members of Little Brothers of Jesus, and from this incredible place it is possible to see the Tahat, the highest summit in Algeria. Getting here is easy, but can only be done as part of a guided tour in an all-terrain vehicle, which is also true for the majority of trips in this area. When you arrive in the area, you can walk along an incredibly beautiful route; the walk takes about five hours and you will enjoy the journey into the interior of the country where you will discover the most beautiful landscapes.

Rising up to 300 metres
Just like a Martian landscape, the dunes you see here rise up to above three hundred metres of height; and the savage winds that blow in the Grand Erg Occidental (Western Sand Sea) have shaped the gigantic black rocks over so many years that it has resulted in a fascinating and unique lunar landscape on the Saharan sand. It is truly unbelievable! To arrive at the Western Sand Sea, you pass kilometres and kilometres of dunes, only interrupted by oases such as Beni Abbès, Timimoun or Golea; your only company will be friendly camels and the not so popular (although equally exotic) fauna which has adapted to living in these inhospitable conditions. Naturally, you can only visit here by camel or 4x4 and you must always have a guide. However, it is definitely worth the effort, you will never have seen anything like it before.

This settlement lets you discover the most authentic, purest and oldest aspects of Algeria. You will love it!
A trip to the past
For anyone who has time to travel around Algeria, there are several sites outside Oran that should be visited if you are interested in learning about the country’s very deepest roots. For example, five hundred kilometres south of Oran is the M’Zab oasis: standing like a symbolic gateway to the great desert (the Great South), this settlement is an impressive waterfall of buildings, with the houses all appearing to be on top of one another; and all painted in the characteristic white. This place was founded by the Berber Mozabite tribe who have had very little contact with the European civilizations like the Spanish and French, so that Islam has been, steadfastly, the predominant religion in the area. In addition, the market at Ghardaia, a city next to M’Zab, and the city itself show the oldest and purest Algeria that you are likely to find. This will be a truly authentic trip!

In the heart of the Sahara
This famous plateau is situated on the boundary between Algeria, Libya, Nigeria and Malia and it is the authentic heart of the Sahara Desert. It is one of the most remote places on the planet, an area known for its lunar landscape appearance where you will find a lost paradise and landscapes that will remain etched in your memory for ever. There are only three ways of getting here: trekking, in a 4x4 or by camel. All trips leave from Djanet, a nearby oasis; when you arrive, you will be able to see the dry river beds that used to supply water to this area thousands of years ago, the sheer sand cliffs and the immensity of the desert whose dunes disappear into the horizon. This is, without a doubt, a true life experience, particularly recommended for travellers with an adventurous spirit.

Let's go east
The well-known Turquoise Coast is thirty kilometres to the east of Oran. This is very different from all other places, as the prevailing vegetation and climate is Mediterranean rather than wild; the whole bay is formed of coves and small beaches with fine sand, a feature which makes it markedly different to Oran’s coast. This is the location of the town of Sidi Fredj where you will find a sailing club for tourists which offers a wide selection of activities in the area. It is the preferred destination for lovers of maritime sports: on the one hand, you can participate in maritime activities, such as diving, scuba-diving, snorkelling and a plethora of related activities, as well as trips around the coast: on the other, it is a special place to enjoy a delightful, romantic evening, watching the sun setting over the Algerian sea. An oasis of peace and tranquillity far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Roman ruins
An area with archeological remains where you can appreciate the legacy left by the Roman empire in the country.
Centuries old
One of the features of Oran that make it so idiosyncratic and which is still clearly in evidence when you arrive in the city, is its heterogeneity; the interlinking of different crowns from around the world as well as the mixing of local cultures has given rise to this fusion, which allows us, in the present day, to see a unique collage. In this respect, the areas of Dejmila, Timgad, Tipasa and Cherchell are home to a collection of Roman ruins left by the Roman Empire when it passed through the area. This was due, in the main, to its interest in dominating the trade routes. One particular ruin stands out: Setif, a settlement located just outside Djemila, which means the beautiful one; along with Timgad, it is home to the best preserved ruins, all of them from the time of Trajan. Also, you must not miss the Tipasa cemetery, another place which is exceptional because of its singular beauty. The perfect place to visit for lovers of ancient history.

Something for everyone
We could say that Oran’s coast is divided into two different settings: firstly, there are a number of modern, well-equipped sports clubs where you can practise aquatic sports such as snorkelling, diving, watercraft or jetski. Visitors can also enjoy a good lunch or candlelit dinner in the fabulous restaurants beside the sea. In contrast, there is a wilder, more natural coast, formed essentially of one beach which divides into two. This is Madagh beach, which, in turn, becomes Madagh II. Both sandy beaches are located outside the city, a few kilometres from Les Andalouses, one of the most popular spas in the area. There is free access and they are very family-friendly; they are surrounded by a wood which makes it one of the most appealing natural areas in Oran to visit.
Santa Cruz Fort

Up on high
The first fort here, on the highest point of Mount Santa Cruz, outside the city, was built by the Ottomans in order to keep an eye on the city and watch out for possible invasions. Later, when the Spaniards took the city and expelled the Ottomans, they used this bastion for the same purpose, but with a new building, constructed between 1577 and 1604; it is still possible to visit these remains although they are not the most recent. Following the Spanish ownership, the French then used this remote place as a sanatorium to cure patients suffering from a terrible cholera epidemic which hit the city in about 1850. The French did, however, build the chapel that you can see before you arrive at the fort itself, called Santuario de la Virgen de la Salud. Today it is the best place to look out over the city and its extensive coastline, providing an unrivalled viewpoint as evening falls.
Dates
Algeria is one of the main exporters of dates in the world. A real national emblem.
An emblematic symbol
Despite first appearances, Algerian cuisine is very diverse and comprehensive, with a generous handful of elements that make it unique and extremely attractive. Dates have an important role to play and they are present in some of its most notable creations; so much so that Algeria has become the second largest exporter of dates in the world. There are many different varieties of date, but the date palm that produces the Deglet Nour date comes almost exclusively from the Algerian Sahara; it can also be found in other countries such as Tunisia, but is not as typical. Dates appears in many of the dishes that you will come across in Oran, being used for many diverse purposes, even in a bread called brissa (the softer date varieties are used in this), a wide range of puddings and, even, a date liqueur called thibarine. Incredible, isn’t it?

An explosion of flavour!
If a group of you is planning to go out for a meal and you all want to taste as many Algerian dishes as possible, we suggest ordering some dishes to share as a taster; for example, a selection of starters that you can order either as an aperitif or as a starter, the perfect choice for discovering more of the country’s culinary tradition. It will be an explosion of flavours! Chermoula, for example, is a very typical seasoning which accompanies fish and seafood, made from the main spices of the area. Dolma, another dish, is a type of leaf which is served stuffed with a succulent mixture of rice, onion, peppers, pine nuts, some meat and each restaurant’s secret ingredients, so its flavour varies depending on where you try it. Finally, kebda will delight the most adventurous palates: liver stuffed with garlic and spices, with a seriously intense flavour. Enjoy!

Names with personality
Located in one of the streets which cross the central Boulevard de Wahrani Boumediene, le Mediterranéen is one of the great gastronomic gems of the city. Its name refers not only to the sea which is the source of its fresh products, but also to the shared experience of the Spanish and Algerian coasts. You are unlikely to find a more perfect restaurant for good fish. With the fish being freshly purchased at the port market, it is the perfect place to try its seafood, its gilt-head bream and sea bream. But it has two more secrets: firstly the music which accompanies the meals every night, a real symbol of the restaurant; secondly, the owner of the restaurant himself, who is a proud host and is happy to explain to interested customers the origins of the restaurant, the dishes or the city. Enjoy your meal!

The night is young
Although historically Oran has not gone out of its way to offer leisure and tourism, it definitely has a few hidden gems, places with a modern atmosphere aimed at both younger people in the area and visitors. The Wifi Resto Club is one of these gems, a place which offers an intriguing mix of Africa and Europe: its food offers eclectic and delicious dishes at reasonable prices, but its particular strength is the atmosphere it creates. Because it stays open until the small hours (check out its food as well) and because of the music which plays continuously, it is an unbeatable choice for starting the night, having a good dinner and the first drink of the evening in a top-class atmosphere. Oh! And as the name says, it offers free wifi to all its customers.
Chorba or the Ramadam diet
The common denominator of the local gastronomy is a spicy, characteristic flavour.
Seasonings rule!
There is one local recipe that is particularly typical and which is eaten especially during Ramadan: chorba. It is a stew made from local vegetables to which lamb is added, although depending on the area, this may also be mixed with chicken. As with the great majority of Algerian and African dishes, it is highly seasoned, including, in particular, garlic, pepper, parsley and other herbs and spices from the area, giving it a truly individual flavour. It has a very characteristic taste which delights even the most demanding palates. Kemia is similar to chorba and is made from sardines, with the addition of carrot, tomato and pinto beans. What a great combination! Oran’s gastronomic tradition is so deeply rooted that it is easy to find restaurants where you can eat traditional meals at good prices and enjoy the authentic flavour of the Maghreb.

Intensively flavoured stews
In 2011, when Sudan was divided into two, Algeria became the largest country in the African continent. Its geographical location bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and also having borders with Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Libya and the Sahara Desert, has led to Oran being a cultural meeting point, a connnection which is also noticeable in its cuisine. And how! One of the dishes that you have to try is a lamb dish called lham liahlou, a type of stew seasoned with cinnamon, orange blossom and cherry. It is divine! There is another way of preparing lamb which is also mouth-watering: mechoui, where the lamb is served roasted and whole. The preparation and presentation of these two dishes, which are very distinctive of Algerian cuisine, makes them both unique and impressive.

Karantika is one of those perfect snacks for any time of the day.
Delicious traditional snacks
Have you been walking around the city centre all morning? Do you need to recharge your batteries? Are you in the souk or in a street outside the city centre? Do you want to stop for a rest? Listen up, you will find this interesting: we suggest trying karantika, a typical recipe of the city made from chick pea flour (a popular ingredient in many Algerian recipes), egg and cumin, served up in a sandwich-shape; in fact, its name comes from the Spanish and is a derivation from calentita (hot), which refers to the temperature at which it should be eaten. Karantika is just one of Oran’s delicious aperitifs which will be easy to find while you are there; you may even find stalls selling this and other traditional dishes to take away. Any time of day is a good time to try this delicious snack.

Eat like a lord
In one of the corners of the Place de la République Sidi el-Houari is an old, stone mansion which is home to one of the best restaurants in the city. Le Corsaire is close to Oran’s port and it offers the most delectable home-made food, a selection of meat and fish of which their popular red mullet and gilt head bream are particularly notable, although you can also try conger eels, moray eels and langoustine. Both the appearance of the restaurant and the preparation of the dishes show that there is not much difference between Oran and the Spanish coast and that they both have a similar history, so much so that they share several common names. For this reason, this place, although not very well signed, is one of the most highly recommended places to eat in the centre of Oran. Are you read to try some authentic delicacies?

In Algeria there are two basic things you need to know when it comes to the gastronomy: firstly, that a meal time is a ritual, a time when the details are important, particularly if it is a social meal or a meal eaten in public; secondly, that tea-drinking is as important as the main course. Or, who are we kidding, even more important. So, the preparation and procedure of tea-drinking will show you one of the many gastronomic wonders of Oran. Tea is usually accompanied by traditional, local sweets: the most popular are samsa and hrisa, really delicious pastries made from dates and semolina. Almonds and honey are common ingredients used in preparing all these dishes; they are used as an ingredient not only in puddings but also in main courses.

Oran’s traditional cuisine characteristically has the same roots as all the Maghreb. There are several recipes which, over the years, have become genuine culinary symbols of the city, and these have to be tasted while you are here: couscous is, without a doubt, the main dish of the city and of all Algeria; although you can find it anywhere in the world, it originates from this area and eating it in one of Oran’s central restaurants is a unique experience. Alongside couscous are other typical dishes such as chorba, which is a soup based on vegetables, lamb, garlic, pepper and parsley, a deliciously intense and very spicy creation. As a main course there is burek, a type of pastry filled with meat, egg and onion, and the well-known kemia, which is prepared in a similar fashion and filled with fish, originally sardines. Any advice? Be careful, it might be spicy.

Mosques with history
As you will see from your stay in Oran, three different historic periods have shaped the history of the city: pre-colonial Oran, the French arrival and the Spanish colony; the surviving architecture that can be found here relates to those periods. Accordingly, the Pasha mosque, which was constructed in 1796 during the reign of Beh Mohamed El-Kebir, was built to celebrate the Spaniards leaving the country. However, it was occupied by French troops and did not return to Muslim hands until the country’s independence. It has now become one of the essential places to visit, to contemplate and to clarify how this city is the result of continuous intermingling, sometimes peaceful, sometimes violent, of both distant and neighbouring cultures. Beauty both inside and out
Although this museum is not in the city of Oran, it is an essential place to visit to learn about Algerian and African prehistory: it is an old Turkish mansion built some time during the XVIII century which originally belonged to a Tunisian prince; later on, it had to be extended during the French reign in the country. This is the Algerian Bardo Museum, which is famous for being the most important museum not only in the country but also in all northern Africa. Impressive beauty both inside and out. The museum itself was established in 1930 and concentrates on Algerian ethnography and prehistory, for this reason its permanent collection displays paintings, ceramics, fossils, different utensils and works of art of incalculable value, either because of the date they were made, or because of what they represent. Unmissable in Algiers
Although the city of Oran boasts generous and colourful architectural evidence of almost all the chapters of its history, it is also true to say that you will have to make a bit more of an effort to match this achievement in the museums. In fact, we recommend that, if you visit the country’s capital city, Algiers, you take the opportunity to visit MaMa: this museum is a cry for attention from the country to the world. The acronym stands for Museum of Modern Art of Algiers and it was inaugurated in 2007 as part of the project called Algeria Capital of Arab Culture. The building itself tells you what you will see inside: it is an Arabic building that was used during the French period but which, soon after independence, was renovated and renamed. Inside, you will find a good overview of modern and contemporary art by artists from Algeria, Africa and the Arabic world.

This stadium is the main sporting arena in the city and the home of the Mouloudia d’Oran Club, one of the country’s most important football teams. The Ahmed Zabana stadium has a capacity of over forty thousand spectators, and is significant for two different reasons: on the one hand, because with its construction Oran sought to show that it was a modern, state-of-the-art city; on the other, because Oran had respected sporting activities which needed accommodating. In fact, this space was built for a multitude of sporting events, among which stand out handball and athletics; it is, therefore, no coincidence that the Mouloudia handball club has an enviable track record. It is a club with deep roots, particularly because it was founded by nationalist activists who managed, as a way of protesting, to challenge other European countries on the court during the period of French occupation

Religious eclecticism
We can reconstruct the history of Oran and Algeria through the architectural works which appear in every street of this city. The first conclusion we draw is that the intermingling of cultures and religions forms one of the fundamental pillars of its development; in this sense, when you visit the Great Synagogue of Oran it is impossible not to think in eclectic terms. It was built at the end of the XIX century but not opened until 1918. An interesting fact is that it is also known as the Temple Israelite. This building became one of the main temples, and one of the largest too, in all northern Africa; however, in 1963, soon after achieving independence, reforms were introduced which were very harsh on its citizens and a large part of the Jewish community was driven into exile. In fact, the synagogue was converted into a mosque in 1975.

Let's head south
For anyone who is interested in learning about the history and prehistory of the African continent, and who has time to visit other areas in Algeria, one of the country’s most impressive destinations is Djanet, located in southern Algeria, almost on the border with Libya: this is where you will find Tassil n'Ajjer, which has an important group of caves which are truly impressive. Here, you can see a very valuable collection of Neolithic pictures, from the era of the hunters; most of these pictures were painted about five thousand years ago, although there are also others which are over eight thousand years old. Thanks to these pictures it has been possible to learn about the hunting techniques of the people in the area, as well as the species of animals which were living in the Sahara Desert at a time when nothing is known about the flora and fauna of the area. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982.

A great cultural centre
Abdelkader Alloula was one of the most important, as well as one of the most polemic and controversial, actors and theatre directors in Algeria. He denounced social injustices and grievances through his prolific work during the seventies and eighties: God’s Bath (Hammam Rabi) was one of his most popular plays because it questioned and criticized the privileged position of politicians while society in general was still suffering hardship. This theatre, in the centre of the city, was named in his honour and it has now become one of the main cultural centres. By the way, as most of the programme is performed in Arabic, you may find a visit there quite a challenge, but if you are interested in local culture we recommend taking the time to choose a suitable show and definitely attending one of its events. You can enjoy not only plays but also concerts.

A fitting tribute
The Algerian War was crucial for the country and the most important historic event of recent decades. It was a conflict in which, in 1954, the Algerian citizens took up arms against the French colonization and which lasted until 1962, when the population finally achieved its longed-for independence. The French presence in the country started in 1830 and lasted for over a century. This museum, which is located in the city of Tizi-Ouzou, opened its doors to honour the victims of this war. It is actually nearer Algiers than Oran; however, the historical and testimonial importance of this centre and the memory it preserves makes it a place that must be included in the list of essential places to visit: it provides a powerful insight into the intricacies of the conflict, with numerous graphic testimonies that explain its development and how it affected the people.

Roots uncovered
This centre is named after Ahmed Zabana, one of the best-remembered fighters of the Algerian War of Independence. It is one of the main museums in the city and its principal aim is to safeguard the city’s own identity, culture and roots; for this reason there are several rooms tracing the history of art in Algeria: this fascinating journey shows the different influences that have left their mark on the country and on the city, and explains why there is such eclecticism. From the autochthonous African Berber tribes of the local area to Spanish and French influences, as well as the Muslims who came from modern-day Turkey and the neighbouring Mediterranean coasts. All of them have shaped a state with its own distinct heterogeneous culture. The most important room in the museum is dedicated to the War of Independence, definitely the most important historical event of the country’s contemporary history.

Oran’s citizens are proud of its cultural heterogeneity and fusion and the old railway station is a shining example of this. The XIX century building is an architectural gem which emerged from a mixture of French and colonial influences; fortunately, and despite renovations, the original building has been preserved and has become one of Oran’s iconic buildings. It is also one of the most important communication points in the city thanks to the train which links it to Algiers, the country’s capital. In this fascinating place, there is a constant coming- and-going of both Algerians and travellers from all over the world, as travelling by train is one of the most popular methods of visiting both cities. The journey takes five hours, and there are spectacular views of the countryside from the train windows. Pure Africa!

Let's talk about the different districts
Oran is divided into twelve very different districts, differing both in their appearance and in the laws that govern each one. The district of Sidi Houari is the historic centre where it is believed that the origins of the great city lie; at any rate, what is definitely known is that it was one of the first Ottoman settlements in present-day Oran and the Spanish and French made bids for it on successive occasions. In this area you will find the historic Saint Louis College and the old Pasha mosque showing evidence of the settlement’s cultural heterogeneity; however, most importantly, you will find the Palace of the King Bey d’Oran, perhaps the most famous of all the architectural remains. Of course, as you walk through the streets you will also be able to see traces of the Spanish colonization. The district of Hamri, known as Lamur, is another of the central districts which best testifies to the French stay in the city.

A genuine icon of Oran
The green dome is one of the most famous symbols of Oran, located, moreover in an enviable situation in the Algerian city. High above the coast, its panoramic views look out over the bay and a large part of the city, making it one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the whole country; evenings here are particularly romantic, with the sun setting over the Mediterranean waters. Despite the steep climb up here, it can be reached on foot, by car or by public transport: there is a spectacular cable car which will take you right to the door itself. Inside this religious building, which used to be a centre for prayer and a place for the faithful to meet, there is also a cave which serves as a place for reflection, with the only sound being that of water dripping onto the stone floor. As you can imagine, this really is a must-see, a trip not to be missed.
The bullring

Yes, that's right!
It may seem strange, but you’d better believe it: Oran has a bullring. It is one of the most curious monuments that you will come across during your visit, particularly as it was built during the period of French rule. Why? Because there was still a large Spanish community in the city. The building is beautiful, truly individual, a hotchpotch of the typical historical bullrings of the Iberian Peninsula combined with local trends and materials; meticulous masonry of light and coloured stones and several eclectic decorative elements. Following the country’s independence, it was no longer used as a bullring from the 1960s, and now, the authorities allow local football teams to play inside it, which makes it even more extraordinary: watching a football match on, probably, the only circular pitch in the world will be a genuinely novel experience. The legendary Plaza de Armas
Also known as the Plaza de Armas, this area was responsible for ensuring that the centre of the city remained safe. It is an important area in Oran, for several reasons: on the one hand, it is the symbolic place where the Spanish invasion of Algeria started and ended, so symbolic that the two years recorded here are 1509 and 1792: on the other, because it is the hub of commercial activity in the city. It boasts a long tradition of merchants and peasants from the area coming here to negotiate over all types of products, from both Africa as well as the whole of Mediterranean Europe. Currently, one of the walls of the square is formed by the beautiful Opera building, giving us yet another reason to visit it. The tram which runs through the historic centre stops here: we recommend travelling by tram around the area and taking in the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Rosalcázar Fortress

The past and the future together
The Rosalcázar Fortress (today called Château Neuf) was built during the XVI century, while the country was still under the influence of the Spanish crown, creating one of the most well-known architectural monuments in Oran. However, both the political changes suffered by the city, which were usually accompanied by armed conflicts, and the terrible earthquake which devastated the city on the night of October 8th, 1790, resulted in a large part of its architectural history, from all eras and all countries, being lost. Fortunately, and despite the fact that the interior of this enormous fortress is still being restored, it is possible to visit its outside areas, see the walls which at one time defended the enclave and take a look at one of the most important military buildings which the Spanish rule brought to Oran. In fact, the city council plans to be based here in the not too distant future.

A historic survivor
This temple was built during the XVIII century, when Oran was ruled by Mohamed Bey, one of the most important monarchs of this country’s modern history. The sovereign ordered the mosque to be built as a place of prayer for the people in 1797. In spite of the fact that the city has suffered many changes of fortune since its construction, sometimes with serious consequences for its architectural heritage, the Hassan Bashan Mosque has managed to survive through to the present day to become one of the main meeting places of the Muslim community. Sadly, as is the case for the majority of mosques, it is not possible to visit its beautiful interior; however, it is worth making a visit to this part of the city just to admire the arches and vaults of its facades. Incidentally, its construction coincided with the expulsion of the Moors by the King of Algeria.
National Museum of Fine Arts
The third contender: another top-ranking museum. Simply stunning.
Not two but three
Together with MaMa and the Bardo Museum, the National Museum of Fine Arts completes the trio of centres located in the capital of Algeria, making it truly worth your while, if you have time, to leave Oran and visit its neighbouring city. Although each museum covers a different period, this last museum is the largest in the Maghreb area and has over eight thousand works on permanent display. It is hugely important because, despite the great architectural content of both cities, it has been harder to maintain its artistic heritage over the years due, among other reasons, to the continual wars in the struggle for control of the country or the religious conflicts. The collection it houses includes major works from the XIV century up to the XIX century; the Art and Revolution display is particularly notable, an ode to good taste.

With Christian roots
Throughout your visit to Oran, you will see that the majority of its monuments fall into three large groups: those built by the Berber civilization before the arrival of the Europeans, those constructed under the Spanish crown and those erected during the era of French colonization. In this respect, the Sacred Heart Cathedral (Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur) was a product of the Spanish rule in Oran: it was built in Kahina square, one of the busiest, most popular and attractive central squares of the town centre. It is a truly remarkable building which will certainly impress you. Although it is currently a public library, which you can go enter to view the interior, the façade retains the arch and towers decorated with blue and white sculptures, still with the original motifs. The ochre colour, so typical of the African area, contrasts with the Iberian architectural style creating a truly unique blend of the two.

After Algiers, the country’s capital, Oran is the largest and most important city in Algeria. It was founded in approximately 927 by merchants who used this port as a meeting point on the Mediterranean route. Not long after this, the Spanish occupied the city and they did not leave until the severe earthquakes of 1790 (the Ottomans had also attempted to expel them, of course). The French occupation started in the XIX century and a large part of the city’s appearance is due to them; it is not surprising that it is said to be the most European city in all of Africa. Even so, it still has an interesting heritage from its Muslim origins, a religion that is practised by 99% of the population today: a perfect example of this is the imposing mosque which was built in 1769, almost the only mosque in the world which allows visitors inside.

Walking among animals
Oran and its surrounding areas are hugely attractive for nature lovers, thanks to the natural and geographical diversity which they accommodate. There are numerous organized trips and excursions which will enable you to discover the country’s natural environment. You have two choices: on the one hand, to travel northwards, a wild area where you can go into the woods to see hyenas, foxes, wild cats , boar and, in the more open areas, wild horses and goats. In fact, with a little luck and a good guide, you will discover the secret places where the macaques hide; on the other hand, you can also go south, a more desert area where you will find hyenas and jackals, but, above all, white dromedaries and camels. These are wild animals that continue to live within their own ecosystem. They are a true symbol of the country.

Contrasts everywhere
One of the most notable contrasts in Algeria lies in its enormous diversity of plants. Thanks to the changing and rugged geography, in the north of the country, where there is a Mediterranean climate you can find cedars, heather, strawberry trees and pines and, in general, some of the most colourful species of plants. Why? Because it is close to the coast and has milder temperatures. In contrast, the south of the country has desert landscapes where you can enjoy cypresses, palm trees, terebinths and several species which are resistant to long periods of drought, sudden changes in temperature and adverse weather conditions. In fact, it is here that you can see one of the most characteristic elements of Algerian cookery: dates, which are an ingredient in some of the most traditional recipes and which no respectable table would be seen without. All the varieties of date come from this area.

An attractive commercial port
This port was the access point to the sea built by the French colony and it was the city’s main economic driving force, its great point of strategic interest. It is located to the north-west and built on the site of a previous port, dating back to the ancient Berber civilizations. In fact, Oran has always been a popular port with merchants and traders from the Mediterranean: boats and frigates used to come here from all over the world, including Asia, and also traders from the interior of the African continent; this is one of the reasons why you can find elements of other cultures, such as the Asian culture, in Algerian folklore. However, it is not just this that awaits you here: as well as the historical content, which is of undisputed importance in learning about Oran’s development, the port offers superb views out over the Mediterranean Sea, an image which will remain etched in your memory for ever. A great cultural programme
Despite a large part of the architectural-cultural baggage of the city reflecting the colonial periods, this theatre stands out as being much more modern: it is the symbol of a growing modern trend which appeared gradually among all levels of society; and unlike its companion theatres, is an open-air amphitheatre where visitors can enjoy interesting shows, aimed at a large audience. Fortunately, the city’s climate makes it possible to present dance, music, ballet and other cultural activities, many of them top-class, practically all year round. Its programme, one of the most comprehensive in Oran, offers something for all tastes. Its evening concerts are particularly recommended, a stage where the best local artists perform. If you have not experienced rai music and discos don’t appeal, this is another place where you can hear it.

On a par with Europe
A word of advice. Before travelling to Oran, try to leave any preconceptions you may have behind, because there are several aspects of this city that will surprise you. For example, let’s talk about the night lift: partying in Oran is on a par with other European cities. Although there’s no denying that it has a completely different way of doing things, at the weekend, the streets in the historic centre fill up with people as night falls. At the start of the evening, the avenues around the Plaza de Armas are the perfect place to sit on one of the terraces and enjoy a pleasant dinner and the first drink of the evening. Then, you can go on to any of the city’s famous discos, which are called cabarets in Oran, to discover at first hand the eclectic atmosphere that defines Oran; many of these venues host live acts of rai music. You’ll have a ball!

A breathe of fresh air
The gardens of Promenade Ibn Badis have the honour of being the oldest gardens in all the Maghreb and, moreover, a truly special spot, of exceptional beauty, in Oran. They act like the green lungs of the city, as the Algerian city is not known for its abundance of parks. These gardens were built during the French period just over 180 years ago; however, not much is known about the exact date or any other information which would shed light on their construction, which is rather curious considering that there is detailed documentation on other places which were built earlier, such as the mosque or Fort Santa Cruz. In any case, it is symbolic of the initiative to introduce into Oran one of the most distinguished European urban forms, wooded areas, which during the XIX century were created in many cities of the old continent. They are, without a doubt, a perfect place to wander and relax surrounded by nature.
