Make the most of a visit to the museum to also discover the volcano that protects it. Spectacular!
On the slopes of the Pichincha
The Museo de Sitio La Florida is located on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, which is one of the most symbolic of the Ecuadorian capital. The museum stands on the site of a necropolis discovered by chance during the construction of a football pitch in 1980. Its collection includes numerous archaeological remains from civilisations dating from the 3rd to the 7th centuries. What's more, certain pieces in this collection also indicate human presence as far back as around 2,000 BC, which is much earlier than was previously thought. The graves here can be seen from the wooden walkway around the perimeter of the site, a place where a significant amount of the imaginary and symbolism used by ancient civilisations was discovered. A personal recommendation? Try to combine your visit with an excursion to the stunning volcano that looms over site. Quito in its purest form.
