Church of Our Lady of Candelaria de Tijarafe

Home to the Virgin of La Candelaria, patroness of the Canary Islands

Located in the town of Tijarafe, 19 kilometres (12 miles) west of Santa Cruz, the single-storey Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Tijarafe stands on the site of a prior hermitage erected in honor of the Virgin of La Candelaria (the original name of Tijarafe), the Catholic patroness of the Canary Islands. Built in the latter half of the 16th century, this pretty church is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a pair of chapels on each side, and is home to the venerated 16th-century icon of the Candelaria Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus. But perhaps the most valuable element here is the 17th-century Baroque altarpiece of the high chapel, crafted by one of the Canary Islands' foremost artisans, Antonio de Orbarán.
