Like many other areas of Spain, Valencia has seen many cultures leave their marks locally - and nowhere is this more true than in cuisine, and notably in the local sweets. Top examples include pumpkin buñuelos, doughnuts especially typical around March's annual Falles festivities; coca de llanda, a sugar-dusted white cake; and arnadí, a kind of pie dating back to Moorish times which is based, again, on pumpkin, or on sweet potato. Other sweets and pastries of Moorish origin tend to involve almonds and/or honey; examples include the popular mocadorà (marzipan in the form of colourful fruit shapes); huesos de santo ("saint's bones", sugared egg yolk in a marzipan wrapper); and of course the now ubiquitous turrón, (nougat made from nuts, egg yolk, or several other ingredients) which originated in this part of Iberia.
