San Salvador means "holy saviour," and Jesus Christ is the reason for this season, with two weeks of street processions and partying.

August Festival

A two-week party honouring the city's patron saint.

In the week before and after August 5, much of San Salvador pauses to observe the fiestas agostinas, in honour of the city's patron saint, the Divine Saviour of the World. It's a time when a good bit of the citizenry takes to the streets, whether for religious processions (such as that conveying a painting of Christ from the basilica to the cathedral) or street fairs, partying, concerts, perfomances, and more. So bottom line - if you're looking for 24/7 action, San Salvador in the first half of August is your place.
