Hill of the Three Crosses and the Easter pilgrimage
More than half a million people climb up to this monument every year.
On Holy Thursday and Good Friday
Are you are looking for a display of religious feeling in Cali beyond the historic buildings? Then Easter Week is your moment. The pilgrimage up to the Hill of the Three Crosses is probably the date which believers look forward to most all year. This tradition has been celebrated since 1837, when the monks first climbed up to the summit of the hill and placed these crosses here, which have since become present-day symbols of the city. The figures are inescapable: over half a million people of all ages undertake the romeria, or religious procession, between Holy Thursday and Good Friday, a number which increases every year; this event is repeated on May 3rd. Some undertake the climb as an opportunity to atone for their sins and to make promises to God, but others use the occasion as a sporting event and run up to the top. On these two days the city grinds to a halt while this unique occasion is celebrated.
