It is remarkable for its very tall palm trees, elegant gardens and the buildings around it.
The heart of the city
We are not exaggerating when we say that this is the heart and soul of Cali, a symbolic place both because of its historic significance as well as because of the important role it played in the city’s development; this was the place where the expansion of the city started. The Plaza de Cayzedo pays due homage to Joaquín de Cayzedo y Cuero, leader of Valle del Cauca’s independence, by naming the square after him and erecting a large bronze statue to him in the centre. This square is famous for its very tall palm trees, the elegant architecture of its gardens and the important buildings around it: San Pedro Cathedral, the National Palace and the Otero Building, palatial treasures in a variety of styles. We could say that this is the busiest square in the whole city, perfect for investigating the urban lifestyle and seeing the day-to-day routines of Cali at first hand, listening to spontaneous discussions and taking the opportunity to chat to street vendors. Unmissable!
