Shopping in Granada's Alcaicería
Granada's traditional souk is smaller than it used to be, but it remains outsized in ambiance and shopping opportunities
Narrow lanes, historic buildings, high-quality souvenirs
Between the cathedral and Calle Zacaitín you'll find Ganada's historic souk (market area), smaller than before it suffered a fire around the mid-19th century, but still very inviting and atmospheric. Its narrow lanes are home to scores of stands and shops specialising in crafts and artwork that make superb mementos of your visit. Prominent examples include various items (chess sets, boxes, guitars, furniture, you name it) crafted in various materials using a traditional inlay technique called "taracea"; pottery; lace fans; gypsy and flamenco outfits and castanets; and of course T-shirts of various types (our favourites are the ones with the name of the Alhambra rendered in graceful Arabesque script).
