MAPI: The Museum of pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art
MAPI is one of the city's most valuable cultural assets. It has won the Ibero-American Museum Prize. That says it all really.
The fact that in recent years, it has been awarded the Ibero-American Museum Prize should give a good idea of the huge cultural value of this centre. It offers an unmissable opportunity to explore the customs of the native cultures on the American continent, with important archaeological and ethnographic pieces from various indigenous peoples. It has a number of permanent exhibitions dedicated to Uruguayan art and archaeology, an area dedicated to pre-Columbian art and another really interesting section on Latin American musical instruments. MAPI is much more than just a museum: it is a cultural and educational centre that researches, publishes and promotes contemporary creations inspired by tangible and intangible aspects of the continent's indigenous cultures. At the heart of the historical quarter, the museum is in a late-19th-century building which combines art nouveau elements with eclectic Italian ornamentation.
