You’ll discover Porto’s most authentic and genuine flavours taking a trip round this market which oozes nostalgia with a bohemian tint.
The quintessence of Porto.
Porto’s most important market, with its nostalgic air times gone by, is a must-see for all visitors seeking to sample the flavours of the city at its most authentic. It’s a true neo-Classical architectural jewel, decadent in style, whose two-story interior offers fish stands (the cod is highly recommendable), greens, meats, flowers… as well as crafts shops, clothing, perfumes and gifts, as well as quaint bars and cafés that retain the look and feel of yesteryear, creating a delightful Bohemian feel. A perfect spot to absorb the true essence of Oporto, the Mercado do Bolhao is in Fernandes Tomás Street and opens from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It dates back to 1839, when the municipal chamber decided to build a square where merchants could sell their wares. In 1914, Correia da Silva signed the contract for the current building, which was quite ahead of its time, combining a concrete structure with materials such as granite, metal and wood. Not surprisingly, in 2006 it was recognized as a city monument of touristic interest.
