Fundación Serralves (Foundation)
An interesting cultural visit: contemporary art with young avant-garde artists and art deco gardens.
The most visited of all.
No contemporary art lover can pass over a chance to visit this renowned complex. It isn’t for nothing that the Serralves Foundation can claim to be the most visited museum in all Portugal. It’s a case of being a European institution whose aim is to support and disseminate contemporary art through exhibitions or projects aimed at promoting upcoming young artists. The set-up comprises the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Serralves Foundation House, the gardens and an auditorium, as well as a restaurant and terrace with views of the park. The Museum of Contemporary Art designed by Álvaro Siza, houses creations by avant-garde artists from both Portugal and abroad, showcased both individually and collectively. There is a permanent collection of exhibits with works dating from 1970 to the present day. Amongst the most represented artists names like Marcel Broodthaers, Mário Merz and Georg Baselitz strike a chord. On the other hand, seasonal showcasing doesn’t only happen in the museum, but also in the Serralves Foundation House, or even in the gardens (which stage open-air concerts). The Serralves Foundation House, opened in 1999, is in the art deco style and was declared an Asset of Public Interest in 1996.The gardens, one of the few European examples of Art Deco gardens, were designed by Jacques Gréber and cover an area of 18 hectares.
